Looking Inside, Preparing for Lent....

As February unfolds and the world around us begins to embrace the quiet beauty of winter, we find ourselves on the cusp of a sacred season—Lent. This time of preparation invites us to reflect deeply on our lives and our relationship with God, but perhaps most importantly, it calls us to embody love in its many forms.

In the Episcopal tradition, Lent is not merely a period of sacrifice or self-denial; it is an opportunity to deepen our understanding of love—both divine and human. As we navigated the brisk days of February, we are given a unique chance to cultivate a heart open to the transformative power of love before the Lenten journey begins. This preparation involves looking inward, examining our intentions, and recognizing how we can extend love beyond ourselves.

During this month, let us consider how we can practice love in tangible ways. It might mean reaching out to a neighbor in need, reconnecting with a friend we’ve lost touch with, or simply taking the time to reflect on our own capacity for compassion. These acts, though small, ripple outward, creating a community grounded in love and grace.

In our churches, we can encourage one another to embrace this love-filled approach to Lent. As we gather for services and fellowship, let us engage in conversations about what it means to love authentically and how we can prepare our hearts for the days ahead. By nurturing a spirit of love now, we set the stage for a Lent that is rich in meaning and connection.

As we anticipate the solemnity of Ash Wednesday and the weeks that follow, let us remember that love is at the heart of our faith. It is through love that we encounter God, and it is through love that we are called to serve one another. Let January be a month of preparation, reflection, and above all, love—a foundation we can build upon as we enter the sacred season of Lent.
